1. The service

Can I Afford This...? (caniaffordthis.nz) provides free, unbiased affordability calculators for New Zealanders. The service includes mortgage, car, holiday, and purchase calculators, as well as an optional bank data integration powered by Akahu.

2. Not financial advice

All calculations and AI-generated insights are for informational purposes only and do not constitute financial advice. Results are estimates based on the inputs you provide and publicly available data. Always consult a registered financial adviser, mortgage broker, or bank before making financial decisions.

We make no warranty that our calculations are accurate, complete, or suitable for your specific situation.

3. Bank connection (Akahu)

The optional bank connection feature is powered by Akahu, a licensed NZ Open Banking provider. By connecting your bank:

  • You grant us read-only access to your account list and transaction history via Akahu
  • You authorise us to pass sanitised (de-identified) transaction data to Google Gemini AI for financial analysis
  • You understand the extracted figures are AI estimates and may not be accurate
  • You can revoke access at any time from your profile or at my.akahu.nz

We do not move money, make payments, or modify your bank data in any way.

4. User accounts

Creating an account is optional. If you create one, you are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure. You must be 18 or older to create an account.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the service for any unlawful purpose
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, scrape, or overload the service
  • Use the bank connection feature on behalf of someone else without their explicit consent

6. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by NZ law, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of this service or reliance on its output. The service is provided "as is" without any warranty.

7. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. Continued use of the service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the new terms.

8. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand. Any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.
