Who we are

Can I Afford This...? (caniaffordthis.nz) is a New Zealand affordability calculator tool. We help Kiwis understand whether they can afford mortgages, cars, holidays, and purchases by running honest, unbiased calculations.

What data we collect

Account data (optional)

If you create an account, we store your email address and any financial defaults you choose to save (income, expenses, deposit). This is stored in Supabase and used only to pre-fill your calculator inputs on future visits.

Calculation data

When you save a search, we store the inputs and results you chose to bookmark. We do not store calculations you do not explicitly save.

Bank connection data (optional — Akahu integration)

If you choose to connect your bank via Akahu, the following applies:

• We request read-only access to your account list and transaction history via Akahu's Open Banking API
• We retrieve your last 90 days of transactions and pass them — with all personal identifiers removed — to Google Gemini AI for financial analysis
• We extract estimated figures for income, expenses, and debt repayments and store only these summary numbers — not your raw transaction history
• Your Akahu access token is stored server-side only (never returned to your browser) and is used only to run analysis on your behalf
• You can revoke access at any time from your profile page or directly at my.akahu.nz

How we use your data

• To pre-fill calculator inputs for a faster experience
• To allow you to save and compare multiple searches
• To generate AI-powered financial insights from your bank transactions (only when you explicitly connect your bank)

We do not sell your data, share it with advertisers, or use it for any purpose beyond operating this calculator.

Third-party services

• Supabase — user accounts and saved search storage (Supabase Privacy Policy)
• Akahu — NZ Open Banking data access (Akahu Privacy Policy)
• Google Gemini AI — financial insight extraction from sanitised transaction data (Google Privacy Policy)

Data retention

You can delete your account and all associated data at any time by contacting us. Bank connection tokens are invalidated when you disconnect from your profile.

Cookies

We use a short-lived session cookie after bank connection to facilitate the OAuth handshake (expires after 1 hour). We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.
