NZ Superannuation (NZ Super)

A government-funded pension paid to eligible NZ residents from age 65, regardless of income or assets.

NZ Superannuation is a fortnightly payment from the government available to all eligible NZ residents from age 65. It is not means-tested, which means you receive it regardless of other income, savings, or assets. The amount you receive depends on your relationship status and living situation.

The current rates (as of April 2026) are approximately $28,800 per year after tax for a single person living alone, and approximately $44,400 per year combined for a couple where both qualify. These rates are adjusted annually on 1 April to reflect changes in average wages.

NZ Super is taxable income. The amount of tax deducted depends on your tax code. If NZ Super is your only income, you will generally use the M tax code. If you have other income, a secondary tax code may apply and your after-tax amount will be different.

How This Affects Your Mortgage

NZ Super provides a baseline income in retirement, reducing how much you need to draw from your own savings. For a single person, it covers roughly $28,800 per year, which may or may not be enough depending on your expenses and whether you own your home.
